No movie ever looks quite the same. No movie is quite the same. A movie is a thing alive, and it slowly dies. In that vulnerability, of film’s materials and of our own awareness, is the richness of the movie experience.

Sheldon Renan, An Introduction to the American Underground Film

super 8mm film, digital projection, live camera feed, fire

2021

Reels of salvaged super 8mm home movies dated from 1976-1980 were projected for a small group of friends in a garage. The film was burned once projected, making this viewing the last possible one. A camera was pointing at this site of destruction. The camera footage went into a laptop connected to a hard drive and a digital projector. The projected flames engulfed the house opposite the garage as the burning continued. A second camera pointed at the hard drive and this footage was live-streamed on twitch. After the film ran out, the hard drive was destroyed with a hammer and the twitch livestream deleted. All that was left was our faulty memories of the night.
